Homework for December 13

Hi Everybody!

It was great to see you today. To those kids who helped the university students with their research project, thank you very much! Well, today went a little differently than I had planned... you guys went MATH CRAZY!! So, go ahead and go crazy!! You can do ALL of the Multiplication and Division section (green... pages 177 to 206). The girls all told me that the Addition and Subtraction is SO EASY and they said they want to do that, too. OK! Pages 157 to 176 are ok to do at your own pace, too.

What you need to do, though, is think through the equations in ENGLISH!! I know you guys are great at doing math in Japanese, but you also need to be able to talk about it in English -- try saying the equations aloud in English as you do them so you remember to think in English.

For kids who were absent, although pages 84 and 85 were homework last week, a few people didn't have a chance to finish, so you have another week to get that done. We will check it next class. Today, we did page 114 in class, and everybody wrote some wacky sentences with funny adjectives. Give it a try and we'll look at the sentences next week.

Finally, although I had planned to do a dictionary activity today, we got sidetracked by math, so we'll do the dictionary thing next week, too. Please bring your dictionary to class (Ren, just 1 is enough !!).

Ok, I think that's everything. Let me know if you have any questions. See you next Saturday!!

Homework for December 6 and LIBRARY TABLE

Hi guys! Sorry for the late notice about homework. Let's just do a bit of reading from our BrainQuest books. Pages 84 and 85 look interesting! Also, pages 158 and 159 have an interesting math concept -- I know you smart kids can breeze through those pages in a flash.

So we'll check those AND let's have another library table tomorrow. We haven't done that it a while and I think our family has a few books to return to other families. Maybe if you have any Christmas books to share you could bring them along? Or any other interesting books.

See you tomorrow!

Homework for Nov 29

Hi, everybody. Long time, no see!! Sorry I've missed a few classes this month. I will be there this Saturday, though, and Scott has a great idea for a homework assignment. This coming Thursday is the day Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving. It's a day when people "give thanks" to their families, to their friends, to God, or to whomever they feel grateful for the good things in their lives. Scott suggested that we write in our notebooks about the things we are thankful for in our lives, and I think that's a great idea. Please spend some time thinking about your life and write a few paragraphs -- don't forget to explain WHY you are thankful for those things. Why are they special to you?

Moms and Dads, it might be a good exercise for us to do, too -- how about a few paragraphs from the parents to share with our group?

See you Saturday!

Homework for November 15

Hi everybody --

Most of you seemed pretty interested in our introduction to ancient Greek Myths last class, so I would like you to look at this website (click here) and choose a myth from the list on the left that looks interesting to you. Read it and write a little story report about it in your notebook. Write:

1/ Who are the main characters?
2/ What are 2 interesting events that happen in the story?
3/ Did you like the story (yes or no)? Why/Why not?

I hope you find something you like!!

I won't see you this weekend because Sophie and Maya have an event at their school, but Doug will be very interested to hear about the stories you read. If you like, you can print out the story and bring it with you to class -- maybe Doug can read one or two of them for everyone to enjoy.

See you soon-

Homework for Nov 1

Hi gang -

Do you have your Halloween costumes ready?! Keep your fingers crossed for NO RAIN!!

But even though we have the party on Friday, you'll still need to be ready for Saturday -- remember I gave you some homework in your Brain Quest workbook (pages 250 and 251)? Please do that and show it to Doug on Saturday. I won't be there (I have to go to Tokyo), so Doug will lead the class.

See you Friday!

Parents: link to interesting article

Hi Moms and Dads:

I was surfing and found an interesting article with links to internet resources for teaching reading and writing. I haven't looked at any of the sites yet but thought you might be interested, too. I've copied and pasted the article into the Pretty Big Kids' blog, which rarely gets visited!! (The article is a bit long so I didn't want the Big Kidz' homework assignment to be pushed out of sight on this blog!) Anyway, click here if you would like to read the article and access the links.

See you Saturday!

Halloween and Homework

Great to see everybody today! You guys did a great job making more interesting sentences with adjectives and adverbs. So, our homework is to finish page 111. Also, as Doug suggested, I think it's a great idea for you guys to make your own animal story that explains something in nature; for example, in the Coyote story that I read today, we heard one idea about why the squirrel's tail curls over its back, and why chipmunks have 3 stripes.

I'm looking forward to reading your stories next week. And, speaking of next week, it has been a long time since we've had a LIBRARY TABLE -- let's bring back the books we borrowed, and bring along a few more to lend!

Now, about Halloween --

It's the Halloween scavenger hunt!! Like last year, it will be at the Provenzanos' house. I think everyone is looking forward to wearing costumes, so let's go for it! The party will get started at 7:00 -- you should be in your costume by 7:00, so it's ok to come a little earlier. Click here for a map to Provenzanos.

The Noguchi kids and the Provenzanos will be eating dinner at about 6:00 or a little before -- curry and rice is on the menu. If anyone else would like to have dinner with us, please let me know! Everyone is welcome, but please let me know IN ADVANCE so I can be sure to make enough.

E-mail me if you have any questions -- see you next Saturday!

Homework to do for October 18

Hi everybody -

Halloween is coming soon! Doug and I have an idea for our party this year -- let's talk about it on Saturday.

For homework, I'd like you to try the first reading activity in our Brain Quest books -- pages 82 and 83. As an extra challenge, find the Columbia river on a map of the United States! If you can't find it, ask Mom and Dad to help...

See you Saturday!

Friday already?! Here's the homework!

Hi guys -

Sorry I'm posting the homework a little late! This week I would just like you to finish up the 4 pages in our new Brain Quest workbook that we started in class. (p 6, 7, 136 and 137)

Kids with Triple Smart books can do a page or 2 in there if you still have some to do, and instead of spelling this week let's do a little writing -- a short (1/2 to 1 page) diary of something fun or interesting that happened this week. Remember - capitals at the beginning of sentences, periods at the ends!!

See you tomorrow -

BBQ at the farm

Well, thanks to Doug and Nick's efforts helping to harvest the rice at the beginning of September, we were invited back to the farm for a Thank You barbeque with Hide and his family. It was a great barbeque, with everything except the meat being produced on the farm. We picked okra, green peppers and eggplants, dug up sweet potatoes, and made delicious rice balls from the new rice. It was a nice way to wrap up a fantastic experience!

Welcome, Aro!

Please bring back any books you borrowed in July, and bring some more books to lend. Remember to write your name in the books you bring for lending.

A Little Homework

Hi again, everybody -- did you read the post below this about the BBQ at the farm? Don't forget to read it, please!

On Saturday we'll be getting back into some regular study time, so I'd like you to do a little writing in your notebooks before you come to class. Write a few sentences about something fun you did this summer. Remember to give your story a title, and don't forget about capital letters for starting sentences and periods for finishing them! Check your dictionary if you don't know how to spell something.

I'm looking forward to reading your stories on Saturday!

Rice Harvest BBQ

Hi everybody! How was your summer? I want to hear all about it on Saturday!! By the way, I heard from Nick that he and Doug went to Hide's farm to harvest the rice at the beginning of September. They both said it was heavy and hard work -- but now that it's finished, Hide and his family have invited us all for a BBQ dinner on Sunday (this coming Sunday - Sept. 14) night as a thank you to all of us for our help planting and to Doug and Nick for their help harvesting. We are not sure yet what time it will all start (maybe 4 or 5 o'clock), but they need to know how many of us will come. Talk about it with your parents and let me know as soon as possible, ok?

Hope you can join us!

July 12 - various things

Hi everybody:

I heard you had a good chance to practice with dictionaries at class last week! Doug said everyone did a good job. He also said you had fun practicing for the puppet show, but that maybe one more week of practice would be good, so what do you think about THIS idea:

We'll practice again on Saturday, July 12, then perform the play on July 19, either at our usual meeting place OR at the log house!!

ABOUT THE LOG HOUSE

We are allowed to use it again for our outing on July 19, as we had planned. Some parents have discussed a possible plan for the weekend:

Saturday, July 19

Study as usual in Ropponmatsu from 10:15 (well, 10:30) until about noon.

Meet at the log house sometime after lunch -- maybe at about 2:00?

Drive to the waterfall, park the cars, and hike in to Doug's Swimming Hole.

Swim!

Back to the log house for dinner (probably POT LUCK -- everybody brings a dish to share)

Sleep!

Sunday, July 20

Wake up (but remember, not at 5:00 a.m. or Christie will cook you up for breakfast!)

Have breakfast (let's organize something together)

Go to the farm to check on the rice and other plants

Say goodbye for the summer!

Library Table

Let's do it again! Please bring back the books that you borrowed if you are finished with them. (If you are not finished with them, hang on to them and bring them next time.) You can put them back on the table and choose something new! Of course, it would be great if you could bring some more books to share, too. See you at the table on Saturday!!

Vocabulary Homework

Hi everybody --

We've been having some trouble with people losing their vocabulary worksheets, so we're going to try a new system!! You all have lovely new notebooks, so I think you can do your homework in there. Every week I will post 2 lists of words, one for group "A" (Let's call that Richie's group) and one for group "B" (Let's call that Kyle's group). If you don't know what group you're in, talk to me.
Look at the list of words and, in your notebook, put them in alphabetical order and write each of them 3 times, like this:
bear bear bear
duck duck duck
juice juice juice

etc.

Then, choose 4 words to look up in the dictionary. Write the meanings of those 4 words like this:
bear: a big, furry mammal that sleeps all winter
duck: a funny looking bird with a big beak

etc.

Finally, choose 2 of your dictionary words and use each in a sentence like this:
I wish I were a bear so I could eat lots of honey and sleep all winter.

I'm not sure, but maybe in the past Group B didn't have to do the dictionary step, but I think you guys are ready to do that, too. Give it a shot!

Here are this week's words:

Group A (Richie's group)

chapter
length
wrist
costume
hundred
piece
certain

Group B (Kyle's group)

never
wrong
flag
thumb
know
coin
write

Book Report Homework

Hi everyone:

It was fun to see what books everyone chose last week at the "Library Table". Sophie and Maya are enjoying the books they borrowed -- how about you guys? I am going to ask you to do a book report for your homework, since we haven't done one in a while. Ask your Mom and Dad to help you choose the best one for you to do. Click here to go to the website where I found the book report forms. Ask Mom and Dad to look at the 2nd Grade Book reports and choose the best one for your level. (As a guideline, Moms and Dads, I'm going to ask Sophie to do Grade 2, book report #4). Don't bother to print out the book report form, just do the work directly in your notebooks. Don't forget the picture!!

Please bring your reports to class on Saturday to share.

See you then!

Homework

Doug wrote this on the board last week, but I thought I would post it again in case you forgot:

1. Do Triple Smart page 129
2. Make a pinwheel (bring it to class to show everyone!)
3. Review pages 126-129 with your Mom or Dad -- they are a little tough to understand

See you Saturday!

I had a lot of fun by Kyle.

On May 3rd, I did rice planting.
First we went in the mud to see how it feels like.
When I went in for the first time I felt yuck! But after we had a mud fight it became so fun standing in the mud.
After the machine finished it was work time.
First we broke into teams and I was on the seedling planting team.
While we were planting we were finding frogs.
We found a golf ball too.
When we went to the next place we found 5 frogs.
When we finished the 2nd place we had some lunch.
The lunch team made a good job.
After we had some lunch we played kick the can .
It was so fun.
When we were finished we went to the log house.
When papa said our friends can come to the log house to I thought yeah!
We had fun at the log house too.
I want to go again.

Fun on the May 3rd -- By Nozomi

How are you Masa?
I'm fine!
I miss your laughing.
See you again sometimes Masa.
Did you enjoy the rice planting?
I didn't.
I got so muddy, so I don't want to go to the field anymore.
Instead, I watched frogs and played DS!
It was so fun to play at the loghouse!
I saw the stars at the log house!

Ren's Rice Planting Day

I liked planting rice. But I love frogs much more!! I got 10 frogs. I knew that my Dad could be a good farmer and I could be a great frog hunter.

Tractor Driver By Phil

It was great to see how the life of a rice plant begins! I really enjoyed driving the tractor and seeing how the automated process of planting rice works. Having the mud squeeze between my toes was fun, too. The lunch was great and Hide's family was so welcoming. It was a great experience for us all. I am looking forward to helping with the harvest.

Rice Planting Day! By Maya

Hi, it's Maya! Did you like rice planting? I did! I made the mud smooth after the tractor turned around and that was fun. Angus and I did that job together. Lunch was good, and it was fun to sleep in the tent at the log house. The next day, I went to the waterfall. When I was walking in the river, I only wore my panties. When I was going to the other side, then I fell down and I froze!! I saw Nick going into the waterfall. He got all wet. I want to go camping with my friends again!

Fun in the mud! -- By Sophie

When we were in front of the rice paddies, I didn't want to go in but I lost my balance, & fell in. Mud splashed all over my pants. When I walked around in the mud, it felt like slime running through my toes, and it felt reallyx100 gross. But when I started planting, I forgot about the mud and started planting, it was actually getting fun, and I forgot about how bad the mud felt and went on planting.

After some hard work, I was very hungry and ate a lot of lunch. After lunch, we went rice planting again, but I was busy making mud pies and catching frogs. I got bored, and went back to the house where I started playing DS. After the fun, it was time to go back to the log house. I had a very good sleep (but the boys were toooooooooooooooo noisy!). I'd like to plant rice again sometime.

Rice Planting - by Jojo

I caught a lot of frogs. I did not like to plant the rice. I liked the lunch. I saw a dead snake. The frogs were annoying. I want to go there again to catch frogs.

Going on an Adventure by Richie

I smelled the breeze of the rice paddy when I was in my car. It was the best trip I ever had. I and the others planted rice for about three minutes. Later, Doug found a dead snake. I noticed because Masa screamed out loud "Snake!" The snake's blood vessel was sticking out of its head. Then we went to another rice paddy, and this time we planted rice for about 10 minutes. After we were done planting the rice, in my mind I imagined Hide's family harvesting the rice. After that,we ate some rice balls and interesting fried chicken at Hide's family's house. Their house is very old.

I saw a pretty dog named Hana but it bit my friend Ren. We played for about 20 minutes until everyone dashed to the house. It was shaved ice time. Most of the kids had the blueberry flavor. After that, we went to the log house. It seemed very hot. The log house was more enormous then I remembered. Later, some of us set up the tents. I wished I had brought some art supplies so I could make things. Our dinner was curry. It was sweet, but delicious. I want to go on a trip like this again. I won't forget it.

My rice planting trip-by ANGUS

On May 3rd Saturday I went rice planting.
We met lots of new friends.
We worked on 4 rice paddies.
But I worked on only 1 rice paddy.
I helped Hide-san, Nick, Phil and Papa move the seedlings.
They were very heavy and I could only carry 2 at a time.
We moved them with a special thing to carry them.
I was lucky that i picked that job because it was easier than planting rice, and it was pretty fun to do.
This was my first rice planting trip.
I want to go again!

What a great experience!! By Christie

I was really excited to see what it would be like to plant rice. Stepping into the rice paddy was much SLIMIER than I expected! I was also surprised by how warm the mud was. I enjoyed planting the seedlings, but I was worried that I was planting too few or too many in each bunch. It was fun to work together with everyone to do something that will produce food for Hide's family. I also enjoyed meeting all of Hide's family and helping his mother make lunch. She is so organized, and she's a really good boss. She wasn't shy about telling me what needed to be done in the kitchen, and she was a good cooking teacher, too. I enjoyed hearing about their old house. She said, "That part over there is the old part -- it's 200 years old! This bit over here is new. It's only 100 years old." I loved the big, twisty beams in the ceiling of the house. I'm really looking forward to going back to the rice paddies soon to see how the seedlings are doing.

Library Table

Ok, so I have talked to some parents about this but I want to remind everyone of our NEW PLAN!! On May 31, I'm asking each family to bring 5 or 6 books from their own bookshelves to put on a Library Table at kids' group (kids from 1-kid families can bring 2-4 books). Be sure to note your name inside the book so we don't get them mixed up. Each child can choose 1 (or 2 if there are enough) books to borrow for 1 (or maybe 2???) week(s). We'll keep a list of who has borrowed what book from whom. This way we can share our resources without having to make a special trip to the library. If possible, please bring books at a variety of levels so that there are good choices for all of the readers in our group.

See you on the 31st!

Christie

Rice Planting Blog Posts

Hi everybody! You will notice that I have taken pictures of the rice planting off the blog -- I decided that you guys should choose the pictures you like to post with your own sentences. I will send some photos to your Mom or Dad's e-mail so you can choose the ones you like.

SO here is what I want you to do... sit down at the computer with your Mom or Dad and ask them to sign in to Blogger (they will know how to do that). Then you should click on "new post" at the top of our blog's page. There will be a space for you to type your title. Your title can be anything you want, but make sure you include your name. Then type the sentences that you wrote in class about our rice planting experience. If you want to type more sentences, go for it!! Finally, you can attach one or two of the pictures that I am going to send to your Mom and Dad. Ask for their help if you don't know how to do that. (Moms and Dads, I will include instructions with the pictures...)

Once everyone posts their pictures and sentences, we'll have a wonderful "memory page" of our rice planting experience!

I'm looking forward to reading everyone's posts...

NOTE**** MOMS AND DADS **** I'd like to see YOUR posts and sentences, too!!!

A few things...

Hi everybody:

First of all, for Saturday's class, please come with your Triple Smart book (as usual), your spelling homework (get ready for the test!!), and bring your ideas for writing your puppet show script. We will work on finishing the puppets and props and writing the script.

Even though Nick and Nina won't be in class (they have gone to England), let's think a little more about our rice planting plans. We need to decide a time and place to meet, and find out who will be able to join us afterwards for a sleepover at the log house!!

Yes, I have contacted the owner of the log house and she said we are welcome to use it -- hooray! We need to think about sleeping arrangements and menu. Please talk with your parents and let me know who can come and stay the night.

Remember, the big day is Saturday, May 3!

See you Saturday...

Triple Smart Homework

Hi everybody!

This week's homework comes from our workbook. Pages 82, 83, 84, 85 -- all about cats!!
Also, take a look through the English section of your workbook. If there are any pages that you haven't done BEFORE "Cats", try to finish them up if you have time.

See you Saturday!

Story Time

Hi Everybody -

Sorry for the late post but we have been SICK! I think we are all ok now, though. Nina said she didn't want to do another book report for her homework, so I want to give you guys 2 choices. You can choose one of these:

1/ Do a book report as we have done in the last few weeks. Remember to write it carefully in your notebook and to bring the book you wrote about.

2/ If you don't want to write a book report, write us a story! Use your imagination to write a story of about 10 sentences (or more). We are looking forward to hearing your creative ideas!!

See you Saturday -

Fun at the Library & Homework

Hi everybody!

It was a great library trip -- I thought it was hard to choose only a few books because there were so many interesting ones there! Too bad we couldn't easily find any chapter books -- we'll have to go again and search upstairs more carefully.

Here are some photos of you guys working hard on your worksheets -- I was really interested to read your reasons for choosing the books you did. I hope you enjoy reading them! For this Saturday, please do a book report (based on the usual form) in your notebook about one of the books you borrowed from the library. Don't forget to draw a picture! (or 3...) The Provenzanos won't be at class on Saturday because we have a kindergarten event, but we'll look forward to seeing you in the next class.

Have fun! (And don't forget to return your books to the library before the due date...)

Homework

Hi again -

Nick reminded me that I haven't posted anything about homework! It's a bit late now, but if you have time to do another quick book report to share with the group when we are at the library, that would be great. If you have a chance to do it, bring it with you to the library.

For tomorrow, this seems to be the plan: Nick, Nina, Angus, Kyle and Monica will go from Ropponmatsu to the Library with the Provenzanos. We'll meet in Ropponmatsu at 10:00. Nozomi, Richie, Jojo, and Masa will all meet us at the library in Momochihama at 10:30. Let's meet in the lobby, then we can go in to the English children's book area. If you come late, look for us there. From 11:00 we will have the use of a room on the 2nd floor where we'll take some books to read and share. We will finish at the library at 12:00.

See you tomorrow!

Library Visit!

Hi everybody! Who wants to go to the library??? (ME!) I think we should all gather at the library at 10:30, our usual start time. Sound ok? I'm expecting Richie and Jojo (and their Dad) to meet us there. Nozomi and her Mom will also meet us there. Let's all meet in the lobby.

Sophie, Maya and I will go from Ropponmatsu, and we can take several people with us. I will park our big green car in front of the Kashi(i?) Jimusho at 10:00. I expect that Angus, Kyle, and Monica will go with us. We have room for 3 more people, so how about Masa's family? Or Nick and Nina? Please let me know who I should expect in our car.

Please everyone remember to bring your LIBRARY CARD and a pencil. I will have a short worksheet for you to do while we look at books.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday!

Book Report Homework

Let's do some reading and writing!! Choose an English book from the books you have at home (or make a quick visit to the library). Read the whole story and then do a book report based on the form I'm going to send your Mom and Dad. The book report form is for your first copy. When you have filled out all the parts of the book report, do a good copy of it in your notebook. Bring your notebook AND the book that you read to class next week.

Moms and Dads, let me know if you have any problems receiving/printing the book report forms.

Thanks!

Doug's Homework

Hi guys -
I just talked with Doug and he said not too many people were able to come to the Kidz Group today, but that he and the kids who were there came up with a great homework idea. So here it is:

For next week, please think of an invention that you are interested in, and find out about it on the internet, in an encyclopedia or other source. (For example, Richie said he's interested in finding out more about the iPod.) In your notebook, write these points:

When was it invented?
Who invented it?
What are 2 good points about this invention?
And write 1 or 2 other interesting things that you learned by reading about it.

Finally, you need to write down the sources you used at the end of your report. If you used a website, write down the website like this:

My Sources
http://www.factmonster.com/

This is a lot of writing for you to do, so make sure you don't leave the homework till the last minute!!! Ask Mom or Dad to help you research on the internet if you need some help. (By the way, Fact Monster is a good place to find information. If you want to check it out, click here). If you have any questions, e-mail me or give me a call! See you next Saturday ...

Happy New Year 2008!

Hi everyone and happy new year! Did you have a good winter holiday? Did you read any good books? I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at Kidz' Group, BUT Maya's kindergarten is having a mochi tsuki event on Saturday, so the Provenzanos can't make it to class that day. Doug will be there, though, ready to hear all about your holiday. He asked me to have you think of someone you would like to write a thank-you note to. If you have some special thank-you notepaper, you can bring that, too, if you like. Did you get a nice Christmas present from someone or some New Year's Money? Maybe someone took you and your family to a nice restaurant? This will be your chance to write a thank you note!!

Sophie, Maya and I will see you all on January 19th!

See you -
